SPY Klutch Goggles – Review

We recently got our hands on some SPY Klutch Goggles. We’ve been putting them through some dusty and blindingly sunny conditions to see how they hold up.

Given the choice I’d rather not wear goggles at all. In fact anything which is distracting, restrictive or even remotely limiting I’d rather do without. So having a big old chunk of plastic and foam strapped around my eyes is pretty much the worst thing I could include in my armory of protective wear. Like Most people I don’t like having my vision restricted in any way. I want clear and uncompromised visuals, particularly when navigating through tight, twisty and often sunlight starved woods.

But goggles are a necessity, as much as I dislike wearing them I’d rather not lose an eye, so when it comes to choosing a pair I’m pretty fussy. When I got my hands on this pair of SPY Klutch Goggles my very first thought was that the eye port itself appeared smaller than I would normally like so I was initially concerned that I wasn’t going to get on well with them on that basis alone. On the quality front though, they looked spot on, although being a SPY Goggles user for many years I didn’t really expect anything less. In plain and understated white they looked very high end and all business.

My first test was at my local downhill trails, tight and twisty with usually just enough room between trees to squeeze through my 800mm bars, peripheral vision is high on the importance list. The Isotron foam was super comfortable around my face and provided a snug fit with no noticeable air gaps to potentially let in dust and ruin my ride. A now pretty much standard silicon beading on the strap was equipped to ensure they stayed well in place around my helmet. The goggles come with two lenses – a clear and a ‘smoke’ tinted lens which was fitted to the goggle. The tinted lens offers a fantastic view point which seems to offer a superb clarity and remove bright spots keeping the view ahead consistent. A static test removed my concerns about peripheral vision. I had an almost completely unrestricted view and my first ride only cemented the fact that these goggles offer a near perfect untainted view.

Whilst the tinted lens is a great addition and really offered visual consistency, as the sun light began to dull it became apparent that it wasn’t the lens to use when the going gets dark so a quick switch to the included clear lens and it was business as usual. Thankfully switching the lens was a stress free affair and unlike many goggles on the market they popped out and back in again with no hassle. A very direct fit into the goggle body.

Given the fantastic dry and hot weather we’re enjoying right now the goggle foam was being put through a fairly serious sweat test. There are few things more distracting then beads of sweat dripping into the inside of your goggle lens or worse; into your eyes. The snug and well designed shaping of the goggle means that the fit around your forehead is perfect and the Isotron foam did its job of keeping sweat at bay, keeping it sealed into the 2nd and 3rd layers.

As expected SPY Optics have produced yet another fantastic goggle that offers untainted vision, a quality build and a very welcome addition of two lenses (and the obligatory funky bright orange goggle bag). If you’re on the market for new goggles put these on your list. You won’t be disappointed if a pair of these are in your kit bag.
