Light and Motion – Urban 650 & Vis 180 Micro Lights – First Look

It’s winter. You’re working nine to five, it’s dark when you go to work, it’s dark when you get home. You still need to keep turning the pedals. You need to shine a bit of light on things.

Light and Motion are a US based company who design and manufacture their lights in California for the Cycling and Scuba Diving worlds, they’ve been making lights since 1989 so they know their stuff. We wanted to see what a smaller budget could get you and whether you really need to max out your credit card just to get a couple of hours winter night riding in.

The Urban 650 and Vis 180 are, as the name would suggest, predominantly urban orientated lights perfect for the winter commute or evening training rides but we’ll be trying them out on the trails as well to see if they can get us safely through the trees and over the roots. We’re already pretty impressed with the build quality on these alone. A crazy solid construction they are clearly not something that you are going to have to worry about when they are bolted to your bars or helmet. Charging is via a micro USB port and even have little amber side lights to offer a little extra peripheral light. Small in stature but on a quick test they pack a surprising punch. The plastic belt style strap for fitting should make them super flexible when it comes to fitment so the options are fairly endless when it comes to use.

Most impressive for this price point is the beam pattern. The top image being the Urban 650 it’s clear to see that when it’s compared with a competitors 650 lumen light (below) that the beam pattern is far wider on the Light and Motion kit. Perfect if tackling terrain that is more than tarmac and kerb stones.

We’ll be taking these out on the trails to see how we get on with them. Full review coming soon.
