Blackspire Twinty 2X Chainguide – First Look

Everyone loves twins, and eveyone loves Enduro (aka Mountain Biking) – Here’s a new chain device for both!

The last event I went to, I saw lots of folk on perfectly serviceable bikes with 1×10 set ups (one bloke was 2×10) walking up some pretty shallow hills, pushing thousands of pounds worth of “trail” bikes that they had ruined through a combination of inadequate legs and a fear that their chain might fall off. For those of who have realised that our legs aren’t up to pushing 1×10 on proper days out and want to hang on to the life-saver granny ring there are a few options available. The Twinty 2X from Blackspire looks to very much be the leader of that range. With no moving parts and a proven system, combined with German/Canadian engineering we must be on to a winner right?

Fitting was very straightforward, with our ISGC05 model bolting straight on. Alignment is fine tuned using the plentiful spacers, and once in place it is very much fit and forget!

Captive hardware keeps the nuts in place while making any tweaks to the set-up of the polymer slider. I’ve run a few different sliders including the awesome Strailine Silent Guide, and this works as well as any of them. You can’t feel any drag while pedaling, and it noticeably reduces both chain slap noises, and the chances of a dropped chain.

Neat and tidy – the slider is plenty wide enough not to make a mess of your chainline. It’s also available in black, blue or white to match your paint job.

Moulded in torque ratings – nice touch!

The taco skidplate removes the need for ugly bashguards and keeps the set-up light.

I’ve run the guide for the last two weeks totally hassle free, and it will continue to get a pasting – check back as the dust of summer settles to see if it continues to be excellent

  • Keep an eye on the wear on that lower slider – mine has had a huge amount in only a few rides. straitline silent hasn’t suffered nearly as much.

  • Looks like a skid plate variant of their Stinger which I used for a couple of years. Defintely prevented losing the chain, but it did still drop off the big ring (onto granny) occasionally and it was usually at the worst possible moment. This forced me to go to  1x
