Ergon GE1 Grips – First Look

Ergon pride themselves on keeping riders comfortable. Tom’s just fitted a set of GE1 grips to his trail bike to try them out.

The GE1 is a grip aimed at aggressive riders who run wide bars and ride “elbows out”. It’s a far cry from the simple rubber sleeves held on by metal clamps, packed instead with sculpted shapes and contouring.

Ergon have ditched the outer clamp, electing for just an inner lockring etched with both “left/right” and also “up” to make sure you get them orientated correctly when fitting them. There’s a decent sized hex key to tighten the lockring to try and prevent accidentally rounding off. The outer edge of the grip is soft all the way out, letting you ride right on the end of the bars if you want. Under the heel of your hand, the inner plastic sleeve is cut away meaning it’s rubber all the way to the bar to make it a bit softer.

The GE1 is available in a bunch of colours, and two thicknesses – regular and slim. I’ve gone for the slim, and they are pretty small. I like a nice thin grip (similar to the Hope offering), but these would also suit riders with small hands. Lazy is running a set of the GA grips which suit a bigger hand or those looking for an even softer ride, but with similar sculpting and shaping.

Grips, saddle and tyres can make or break a bike (and a rider), the first few rides have been great on these, we’ll keep you posted on how they hold up.
