Downhill World Cup #2 – Cairns
Round 2 already. We head to Cairns, Australia. In 2014 the weather was not on the side of the WC circus. Hopefully this year mother nature will play ball

After a bumpy and wet ride in 2014, the UCI World-Cup returns with Round 2 to be held in Cairns, Tropical North Queensland – April 23-24 2016. An iconic venue in itself, the Smithfield Mountain Bike Park is steeped in history with an already successful past in International level racing – having hosted the 1996 UCI World-Championships. 15 minutes from an international airport, the event venue could not be situated in a more prime position. Minutes away from tropical accommodation along white, sandy beaches lining the Great Barrier Reef.
The Course
Sitting above coconut fringed beaches and coral islands of the Great Barrier reef, the 2016 UCI World Cup DH course is pure rainforest racing at its best.
Stitched into the jungle razorback ridges of Far North Queensland’s unique rainforests, this historical Downhill departs high in the tropical mist, at 345 metres, and twists it’s way down through ancient rock outcrops on volcanic clay beside massive strangler fig trees, jungle palms and wait a while vines.

This historical technical course is renowned for its high speed stutters, monster ridge-line jumps, tight technical drops littered with off camber roots. Locals and riders alike are always aware that the tropical climate brews up the odd thunderstorm and monsoonal downpours, which can instantly change the dynamics of the track.
