Shimano AM9 SPD Shoes – First Look
Shimano have recently released their new range of SPD and flat shoes, we got our hands, er feet, on a pair of the AM9s.
Shimano have been working with their riders, in particular the Athertons in developing their latest AM range. At the lower end is the skate-inspired SPD compatible AM5 without the lace flap and with a bit more padding and cushioning. The flat pedal users are taken care of with the AM7 with a lace flap, vibram sole and plenty of protection, and gravity focused SPD users get the AM9 with similar styling.
The AM9, on test here, replaces the popular AM45 in a lighter and more protective format. Straight out of the box they feel pretty light as SPD shoes go. They also feel stiff, not super stiff like a full on XC shoe but certainly not as soft as some clip shoes .
A well protected toe box, lace flap and velcro strap keep things looking tidy, and the blue highlights and laces remove a bit of the “orthopedic special shoe” look that can creep in. The inside ankle area is raised a bit to offer some extra protection.
The sole features a long “pedal channel” designed to accommodate the pedal if you miss your clipping, and guide you back in. The hexagony grip is great on pedals, reasonable on rocks and dreadful in mud, maybe not ideal for a long hike-a-bike? We shall see.
The EVA foam used across the shoe keeps weight down while still offering some protection and support. So far it doesn’t seem to soak up water as badly as my old Shimano DX shoes did. I’ve had a couple of rides out in them so far, and have been really impressed. I normally take an EU46 shoe, and the sizing on these is spot on, accommodating my wide hobbit feet well. These guys will be getting the miles in over the next few months and we’ll see what state they are in!
