Pats Back Country Beverages – Review

Every once in a while you come across a product that grabs you as an awesome idea. Pat’s Backcountry Beverages is one such idea!

Pat Tatera is an American based, with his company Back Country Beverages, in Golden, Colorado. After a disastrous hiking trip  where he forgot his beer he decided to develop a system to allow adventurous outdoor types to enjoy a bevvie anywhere. His portable beverage system is on its way to the UK, so we thought we’d better have a pint or three and see what it was like!

The first step in the system is the beer itself. By brewing using much less water Pat and his team have created beer concentrate without damaging the alcohol content. Each sachet is similar in size and weight to a gel, and makes a pint. As well as “Pail Rale” and “Black Hops”, their two beers, they have a range of soft drinks including cola, ginger beer and lemon & lime. These are all well and good, but no-one wants flat beer do they!?

That’s where the second part of the kit comes in, the carbonator bottle. This is basically a portable Soda Stream, that relies on a chemical reaction to create the carbon dioxide for your drink. The reaction is similar to the one you will have used in primary school to make a volcano. Watch the video for Pat’s run through of how the system works.

We really like the idea, and it works pretty well. The beers are suitably beery, and the soft drinks are also delicious. There are all sorts of advantages to the system over carrying cans or bottles of booze, both environmental and in terms of bulk. If you do any sort of multi-day adventure, and love a bit of slightly geeky outdoor tech you should check these guys out.

Currently they are working with Back Country Biking in Aviemore to get the system through the UK compliance and standards and to the market. Currently there aren’t UK RRPs, but a pack of four concentrates (enough to make 4 pints) should be about a tenner, and the bottle around forty quid. As soon as we get news of the UK launch of this great idea we will let you know.
