Woodland Riders 2013 – Round 3

The 17th of March saw the 3rd round of the Tavi Woodlands Winter series. The weather in the week leading up to the event was varied to say the least, particularly on Saturday which saw everything from hail to sun and heavy rain. This ensured the track conditions on Sunday were moist and challenging.

The rain stayed off for the best part of race day, in practice riders got rid of the first layer of gloopy mud from the track, but then a little downpour worsened the conditions making the track very slow and sketchy in the middle of practice. Luckily the sun was pumping out a fair bit of heat, so the track ended up sorting itself out and got better and better as the day went on.

The track was good; Chaz Lamley and Team did a grand job putting in some new jumps, they even packed in some cement down in a new berm. Take notes race organisers; Turns won’t get blown out if they’re made of cement!!. Pedaling along the first straight felt a bit like you were riding the wrong way but then you dropped down a chute onto a fire road; you only had to put a few pedal strokes in after that to get you sending it down some fresh super-booters and you ended at the bottom before you knew it.

The fastest time of the day went to junior rider Charlie Ross with an impressive 1 min 17sec. The track was relatively short, but the conditions were so energy sapping it felt like it was longer and every second counted so it made for some great racing.

There is always a good atmosphere at these races with plenty of pinned South West racers making it very competitive and from the great efforts of Chaz Lamley and team. It’s great to have these races on particularly at this time of year.
